Rebecca Ingle, 18, of Americus, GA participated in the SkillsUSA Championships in Photography. The national skilled trades championships, held in Atlanta took place on June 21-23, 2022. The annual SkillsUSA conference was a showcase of career and technical education where more than 5,200 outstanding career and technical education students -- all state contest winners -- competed hands-on in 108 different trade, technical and leadership fields. Rebecca is a recent graduate of Sumter County High School. "We are very proud of Rebecca's accomplishments, especially as the high school's first National competitor" said Frederick Mohl, her SkillsUSA advisor. "By showing their dedication to excellence in occupational and leadership skills, Rebecca and the other students who participated in the SkillsUSA competitions are true 'champions at work.'"

Mr. Walter Knighton, Superintendent recognized outstanding students for the fourth nine weeks of the 2021-2022 school year. The students in Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade were nominated by their teacher and then selected by their principal. The criteria for nomination was: all A’s, excellent attendance and model behavior. The students and his/her parents were invited to attend the June Board of Education meeting. As their names were called, Superintendent Knighton presented the students with an “Exemplary Student” yard sign to be displayed in their yard.

Dr. Sharon Tullis, principal chose to recognize the following: Student--Ahijah Dawson; Parent Volunteer--Regina Capone; Custodian--Cathy Wells; Teacher--Tarsha Carter; Paraprofessional--Virginia Brown; and Office--JoAnne Griffin. Following the recognition and photos, the board and audience were invited to congratulate those honored.

Ignite College and Career Academy at Sumter County Schools offers students opportunities to explore many career pathways. Currently, there are 15 career pathways offered to students along with an opportunity for dual enrollment through South Georgia Technical College. Ignite College and Career Academy is essential in allowing students in Sumter County to determine their respective career interests and pursue those interests in efforts to develop a dynamic workforce not only for today, but for the future as well.
