Sumter County Schools October 2022 Board Recognition Program Mr. Walter Knighton, Superintendent of Sumter County Schools, proudly announces the October 2022 "Teachers and Parents in Support of Students" Board Recognition Program honorees from Sumter County Elementary School. Ms. Teira Wallace, the principal and her staff, chose to recognize the following: Student – Melanie Duque, Custodian – Zebb Jackson; Nutrition Staff Member – Angela Laster; Support Staff – Wanda Jordan; Parent Volunteer – Patricia Hill; Paraprofessional – Myia Crawford; and Teacher – Kristal Minter.

Superintendent Walter Knighton is proud to announce that Sheriff Eric Bryant was recognized as Sumter County Schools’ Champion for Education. Chattahoochee-Flint RESA held its First Annual Champions for Education Recognition Luncheon at the South Georgia Technical College Pope Center on November 1st. “There are outstanding individuals in each community who go above and beyond the norm to assist and promote local schools and other educational agencies,” said Richard R. McCorkle, Director Chattahoochee-Flint RESA. The Chattahoochee-Flint RESA Champions for Education program was created to identify and recognize these individuals throughout the region.

During their weekly managers’ meetings, the managers and assistant managers assess operation processes and procedures. They also review and discuss challenges with menus, orders, and staffing. Margaret Goodin, Director of School Nutrition, thanked the group for all they do to keep the lunch rooms running smoothly.

Sumter County School System has adopted the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework. Each school has established a “PBIS Team” who has been working diligently to develop behavior matrices and lessons to teach appropriate behaviors while looking at current disciplinary data.

Jayden’s Hidden Treasures, Inc. Makes Donations to Sumter County Schools Special Needs Classrooms The family of Jayden Johnson donated baskets filled with personal care products to all 20 GAA classrooms in Sumter County Schools. The family started a non-profit organization, Jayden’s Hidden Treasures, Inc., whose vision is the creation of a community where children with special needs are not denied care due to the lack of available financial, emotional, or spiritual resources. Their mission “is to provide parents of children with special needs with the assistance needed to reduce the financial burdens created by medical care.”

Sumter County Schools District Staff Member Recognition Program Sumter County Schools Superintendent Mr. Walter Knighton announced an additional recognition program during the September Board of Education Meeting. He stated, "one of the things we find ourselves working on this year is our vision and mission standards. Specifically looking at the standard that we are trying to nurture within our internal and external communities is to foster a culture of trust, collaboration and joint responsibility for teaching and learning across our district. Tonight, we will recognize the September District Office Staff Member, Transportation Staff Member and Maintenance Staff Member of the Month. One of the things that we wanted to do was not only to look at the excellence that is happening at our schools but also to recognize the staff at the district level who are exemplary and exemplify that excellence that we are trying to achieve."

Sumter County Schools Holds Initial Birth-12th Literacy Coalition Under the leadership of Beri Gesslin and LaShaunda Thomas the Sumter County Schools’ Birth - 12th Grade Literacy Coalition held its initial meeting. Ms. Geeslin and Ms. Thomas led a discussion of the coalition’s goals. They also presented the district’s Literacy and Numeracy plans. Along with information and insights on the “Get Georgia Reading” campaign.

Superintendent Walter Knighton introduced Sherriff Eric Bryant and thanked him and his team for their continued support of Sumter County School. He thanked Sherriff Bryant and the SROs for helping keep our students, faculty, and staff safe during the day.

The Career, Technical, and Agriculture Education Department (CTAE) of Sumter County High School is showing appreciation to its supporters every month. For the month of August, TSG Resolute was recognized for being a CTAE Partner. TSG Resolute employed four Work-Based Learning students from Sumter County High School/Ignite College and Career Academy during the 2021-2022 school year and is looking to employ five students this year.
