Sumter County School System Adopts the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Framework
Sumter County School System has adopted the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework. Each school has established a “PBIS Team” who has been working diligently to develop behavior matrices and lessons to teach appropriate behaviors while looking at current disciplinary data. “This is a plan in progress and the teams will continue to build our Tier 1 systems and practices,” stated Dr. April Smith, SCS District Intervention Services Coordinator and PBIS Coach. “The results of the program have shown improvement in social-emotional competence, academic success, and school climate when implemented with fidelity.” With the guidance of Traci Roach, School Climate Specialist with Chattahoochee-Flint RESA and Dr. Smith, SCS will begin Tier 1 implementation during the 2022 school year. The district team and school teams have been established with a focus on Tier 1 to monitor discipline data monthly and address any concerns related to disciplinary actions, referrals, in and out-of-school suspensions, alternative placements, and expulsions.
